The Key Components of Good Home Insurance

homeowners insurance considerationsMany people don’t realize just how malleable home insurance can be until it’s far too late. The type of home you have, where in California you live and even how much time you spend there will all impact what type of home insurance you should buy and what types of coverage you should be interested in. There are definitely a few key components that separate a standard home insurance policy from a great one that you’ll need to be aware of moving forward.

The Right Home Insurance Policy: Breaking It Down

Remember that the point of a home insurance policy is to make sure that you, your loved ones and your belongings are financially protected in the event of a disaster or other unforeseenĀ circumstances. This is why all of the following components of a great policy are of paramount importance. They include but are certainly not limited to ones like:

  • Liability Insurance. This helps protect both you and your financial assets in the event that someone is injured on your property who then goes on to file a lawsuit. In many situations, $100,000 will be an appropriate benchmark for this type of coverage.
  • Personal Property Coverage. This type of coverage protects items like your clothing, your electronics, your furniture and other personal property that may be damaged or destroyed for any reason.
  • Dwelling Coverage. This type of coverage helps to cover the costs to either repair or rebuild your entire home in the event that you suffer a covered loss. Things like home plumbing, electrical wiring systems and even HVAC systems fall under this category.
  • Loss of Use. If you suffer a situation, like a fire, where you temporarily have to leave your home while it is being repaired, this type of coverage will help you pay for all of your temporary housing and general living expenses.
  • Guest Medical Coverage. This type of coverage provides funds for medical bills and all related expenses when someone else is injured on your property, BUT they do not move forward with a lawsuit. In many situations, $1,000 per person is a very typical level of guest medical coverage.
